Installation of your Emtek brand toilet paper holder is simple to do. The paper holder is actually packed with installation instructions, but we think it's always nice to have real pictures to look at. In this particular installation, the paper holder was installed on a wall that already had glass tile on it. This made the installation a bit more difficult that it normally would be, and there are a few things that you have to be careful with. When drilling around tile you have to be really careful not to damage or crack the tile by applying too much pressure. We'll make comments along this install, pointing out things you should watch for.
| Unlike some other brands, Emtek packs their bath accessories with the good drywall anchors to give you a nice solid installation. Check your packaging when it arrives to make sure you have everything that you need. Emtek's bath accessories are shrink wrapped so the parts should be secured and in place during shipment. You should have mounting screws, drywall anchors, a mounting plate, the decorative trim pieces and some parts will have a nylon washer like this one does. | |
| Read the installation instructions. It's just always a good idea to review right before the installation. I've done a lot of home improvement projects over the years and it's just really easy to forget stuff. Maybe you have a better memory than I do, but if it's been months since I installed an item and I've installed 30 other items in between, there is a good chance I'll forget a step. This is a tough step for me to include because guys just don't like to read instructions, it's just the way we are. We think we know everything. Sometimes we need some guidance whether we like it or not. | |
| Emtek's bath accessories mount to a simple mounting plate that you need to secure to the wall. The first thing you want to do is see if you can mount the plate on a wall stud. The paper holder comes with drywall anchors, but if you have a stud right where you want to install it, I just think you're better off to use that stud. To verify, you can use a stud finder and run it along the wall where you want to install. | |
| In this particular installation we lucked out and there were studs right where we wanted to mount the plate. First thing you will want to do after locating a stud, or determining exactly where you want to mount it, is hold up the mounting plate in position and mark where the holes will be. | |
| As I mentioned before we lucked out on this installation and we were able to mount the mounting plate in between grout lines to a stud. Before doing so we used a drill to clean out a hole where the screws would go. You can skip this step if you are installing on drywall of course. You have to be really careful when drilling in between tile pieces like this because you can chip the edges of the tile if you are not careful. If you have to drill directly into the tile, you will need a specialized tile drill bit or you will just crack the tile. Be careful. You can actually see in the picture I did chip the edge of the tile a little bit, luckily the mounting plate will cover it. | |
| Installing the mounting base is really easy. When you are installing directly into drywall, you can use the provided screws to attach the mounting plate through to the drywall anchors. If you are installing into a wall stud like we are, I'd recommend using a longer screw that will drive into the stud and secure the plate nice and solid. Don't over tighten, especially when installing on tile. | |
| Next set the nylon ring onto the end of the paper holder arm. | |
| Now hold the rosette in place and twist the paper holder arm onto the threaded post on the mounting base. Be sure to line up the nylon ring as you go. Keep turning the arm clockwise until it is tight. Do not over tighten, especially on a tile surface as you may crack the tile. | |
| And the last step is to tighten the set screw under the paper holder arm so that it won't easily twist off the mounting post. | |
| Now you can step back and admire your handy work. The paper holder can be installed with the open end on the right or left, whichever you prefer. We wanted the set screw on the underneath side so we installed it pointing to the right. These bathroom accessories are easy to install, and if you take a few minutes to make sure it is mounted solidly it will last a long time. |
