What You Should Know About the Schlage Orbit Knob:

Note: Schlage entrance locks have a turn button on the inside and are designed to stay locked unless turn button lock is disengaged by the user. Schlage privacy locks have a push button lock on the interior which is disengaged when the knob or lever is turned from the inside.

Finish Note: Oil Rubbed Bronze and Aged Bronze are quite similar. We are noticing more people prefer the Aged Bronze because it has more of a glossy finish with a rubbed look. The Oil Rubbed Bronze is more of a solid matte brown color.

Schlage Door Knob Functions

Schlage F51 Entrance Knob Function F51 Entrance. The F1 entrance function is the most popular type of entrance lock. This lock is unlocked by key on the outside or thumbturn on the inside. The inside knob is always unlocked, so you can exit the house without unlocking the knob. This lock function is considered safer because you can exit the house quickly by just turning the knob.
Schlage F54 Entrance function F54 Entrance. This entrance function is also keyed on the outside and thumbturn on the inside, but when the knobset is locked, the inside knob will not turn. The knob has to be unlocked before you can exit the house. Some people prefer this lock function because its hard to lock yourself out of the house since the lock has to be unlocked to leave.
Schlage Storeroom Knob Function F80 Storeroom. A storeroom lock is typically used on an outside storage closet or storage room. This lock has a fixed knob on the exterior and always remains locked. The only way to unlock the door is with a key. The inside knob has no thumbturn and always remains unlocked.
Schlage passage knob function F10 Passage knob sets do not lock. They are generally used for hall or closet doors where a lock is not required. Sometimes passage knobs are used along with a deadbolt for a locking door. Passage knobs are suitable for interior or exterior use
Schlage F40 Privacy knob function

F40 Privacy door knobs are generally used on bedrooms and bathrooms. Privacy knobs lock, but it is not a keyed security lock. Schlage privacy knobs can be locked from the inside with a turn button in the knob. Can be unlocked from the outside with a generic unlocking tool.

Schlage F170 Dummy knob Function

F170 Dummy door knobs are just one knob that mounts to the door with a mounting bracket. To use a dummy knob your door must not have the 2-1/8" hole drilled as you would for a regular knob set. Dummy knobs are the perfect solution for ball catch doors or other applications where a latch is not needed, but the look of a doorknob is desired.

All lock functions include all the needed mounting hardware. Entrance, passage and privacy knob sets are full sets and include knobs for both sides of the door, latch, 3-way faceplate, strikeplate and mounting screws

Dummy knobs are sold as single knob with rosette and mounting bracket with screws. No latch, strike, or faceplates are included with the dummy function.

Passage, Privacy, and Dummy knobs are non-keyed

Great Service.
The door locks are fine. I received a bad screw with one lock. Anyone who has bought a box of screws knows how often that happens. What matters is the service to take care of my problem that you provided. It was perfect, one phone call to let you know and the parts were on the way. No problems at all. Finding a place to buy door locks is easy, but good service is very hard to find. I'm a licensed California contractor for over 40 years and a California licensed public works building inspector for 18 years. As the chief inspector on multimillion dollar projects I can tell you service is everything.

Learned lockset has been discontinued
I ordered this entrance lock because your notes indicated that the turn button on the inside is designed to stay locked unless turn button is disengaged by the user. I prefer this type of operation. (I have had this type of operation on another exterior door of my house for many years.) I have been disappointed with this lock set since it was installed and does not operate the way your notes say. I called customer service and they indicated they no longer make this entrance lock that I thought I ordered and that it could not be returned since it was installed. I was told customers preferred the lock to disengage when the knob is turned and that is safer. I have to disagree and do not think that type of operation is safer because it operates just like a bedroom or bathroom door. I cannot understand why this type of entrance lock was discontinued and I was sent what I didn't want without an explanation. I suggest that you update your notes for the entrance and privacy locks on your website. It is difficult to give a rating for this lock because is not what I wanted and it seems to be impossible to get the kind of entrance lockset I want. The rating for what you sent me I suppose would be 4 stars because to me it is a privacy lock with a twist button lock that disengages when the knob is turned. Thanks for hearing me.

Question how do you replace a knob ?
Asked by: Bob - 4/21/2014
Question Hi Bob,

This will vary according to what type of hardware you have. Supposing you have a concealed screw mounted knob, first you remove the knob or lever from the inside. To do this locate the spring loaded pin on the shaft part of the knob. You can depress that little pin/button and the knob will slide off. Once you have that off you need to remove the rosette on the interior of the door knob. These sometimes just twist off, others have a little notch where you can carefully pry the rosette back. Once you have the knob and rosette off you should see two screws there. Remove those screws and the two halves of the knob will come off. You can then remove the latch from the edge of the door.

If your knob has expose screws on the inside, just skip the first two steps. Hope that helps! Answer provided by:  Jake (4/21/2014)
