When it comes to choosing exterior door hardware, it’s important to feel safe and secure. After all, nobody feels comfortable installing regular door knobs without a lock on an exterior door! That’s why it’s important to find a lock or locks that make you feel comfortable when you leave your house for the day. However, with so many pieces of door hardware options for exterior doors available, it can be hard to narrow it down. But that’s what we’re here for! Let’s discuss some of the most common options for your exterior door hardware.

Basic Locks for Exterior Doors

The most common combination is probably our basic single-cylinder deadbolts with a passage function knob or lever. A passage function means there is no lock on the door knob or lever, but instead, the deadbolt keeps the door locked. You could also choose one of our double cylinder deadbolts, but it would be keyed on the outside and the inside. This isn’t recommended for most doors because it could be a fire hazard. Another good choice would be one of our deadbolt locks paired with a keyed door knobs or keyed lever style door handles.

Sideplate Locks and Handlesets

If you’re looking for a fancier option, we recommend picking out a decorative plate lock. Sideplate locks can be paired with your choice of door knob or lever in whatever finish you prefer. These work similarly to the deadbolt and passage function knob/lever combo that we mentioned earlier, except there’s a fancy plate in between. You'll have no problem finding one you like from our selection of Emtek decorative plate locks available with multiple knob or lever styles and finishes.

The photo below shows a sideplate with a CC of 3 5/8”, which is not standard prep. We do have 5 ½” CC sideplates available as well.

You can also find many styles of handlesets on our website. These are pretty popular for a front door because they make a statement, but not so much for a back or side door. Most handlesets will only have the deadbolt to keep the door locked, but if you want additional security and to have two locks, you can check out the two-point handleset locks.

Keyless Locks

Don't forget to check out keyless locks, which could take the place of several of these exterior door hardware options. We have keyless options available in a variety of styles, from deadbolts and levers/knobs to handlesets and mechanical locks. Choose from top brands such as Emtek and Schlage to enjoy high-quality exterior door hardware that will withstand the test of time.
