Single cylinder deadbolts feature a keyed lock on the exterior of a door and a thumb turn on the interior. Typically, they're used in residential applications and exist as the most commonly used deadbolt.

These deadbolts are akin to single cylinder but have a keyed lock on the interior of the door instead of a thumb turn. So, double cylinder means two keyed locks. These are often found in commercial applications, as they are considered hazardous in residential use in the event of emergencies. They are more difficult for intruders to break into, as keys are needed for each side of the door.

Yes! Because they use a 1" throw bolt that extends into the jamb, they're a much more secure option as opposed to a standalone keyed knob or lever. When installed correctly, deadbolts have two 3" screws that attach to the strike plate. This makes it quite difficult to kick in the door.

Deadbolt locks can be picked like keyed knobs and levers, but with a solid jamb around it, they aren't easily kicked in. It would take great force to break in a door with deadbolt, in which case the jamb would fail before the deadbolt.

Single cylinder deadbolts are found in most homes, as double cylinder deadbolts can be dangerous in situations where quick exits are necessary (like fires). However, they can be picked just as a traditional keyed knob or lever. The important thing to ensure during installation is that your door jamb is solid, as that will make an impact during a potential break-in. An intruder will not be able to easily kick the door in if the jamb is in excellent condition.

It's also important to note that with the thumb turn mechanism, single cylinder deadbolts are easy for small children to open. Ensure these areas are kept off limits to children.
