There are no strict rules to follow. Luckily, when it comes to choosing whether or not a knob or a pull, or mixing both, will work on your cabinets. One of the most common preferences you'll find many people choosing is to use knobs on any cabinet doors and pull for drawers. Larger doors, such as a pantry or pull-out doors (such as a pull-out for base pantries or trash pull-outs) are often outfitted with pulls as well.

The general consensus for many homeowners is that they find it easier to use a drawer pull because this allows the entire hand to grab instead of just the fingertips. When you think about how heavy a large drawer can get with pots, pans, dishes, metal utensils, etc., this makes using a pull extremely helpful.

If you are a fan of a more antique look, you could choose to use all knobs on drawers and cabinets, as using all knobs was the general standard many years ago before there were many different styles of hardware to choose from. Additionally, knobs are typically less expensive than pulls or t-pulls for cabinets, which may be an excellent choice for those with a budget. For a more contemporary style, you might decide to use pulls for everything.

Once you decide knobs or pulls, or a mix of both, you can begin to choose a hardware finish that will add gorgeous contrast to your cabinetry. Pick a darker hardware finish for white or light cabinet colors such as antique brushed satin brass, flat black, brushed antique brass, black nickel, bronze, or oil rubbed bronze. For darker cabinets, choose a lighter finish such as brushed chrome, polished chrome, stainless steel, or polished nickel. One thing to note, for a complete look, try and match your cabinet hardware with your cabinet's hinges or other objects such as faucets and appliances that will be in the same space as the knobs or pulls.

When it comes down to using knobs or pulls, that ultimately comes down to personal choice, and taking the time to evaluate all the options available and their pros and cons can save you time and money later replacing hardware you just don't like.

Whether you choose knobs or pulls, the next step is picking a size for your new cabinet hardware.

For knobs, choosing them in 1-1/4" is always a safe bet. For a more minimalistic look, you can size down. If you're looking for an oversized appearance, choose something larger and bulkier.

For pull sizes, this is where things can become a bit tricky. There are many options for sizes and configurations to choose from. We do have some recommendations below. However, keep in mind that the longer the pull, the more contemporary the style, if that is what you are searching for.

One of the most popular style options is to pick one single size and style and use it throughout the cabinetry. As to what size works best, again, that choice is up to you—but we do suggest choosing pulls that have at least 3-3/4" center to center (the distance between the screw holes.) Additionally, you'll want to pick a pull that is roughly 1/3 the length of the drawer you'll be using them on.

For kitchen drawers with differing widths, you can use a single pull longer in length on the larger drawers, which can offer a cleaner appearance and make it easier to operate your drawers.

Feel free to go full length for both drawers and cabinets for very modern cabinetry and kitchen looks.

Remember that the above suggestions aren't strict rules either. They're an excellent beginning point, but it is more than okay to stray from the norm when it comes to your unique style. Whenever you are unsure where to place cabinet hardware, use painter's tape to help you mark out ideas for where to place them. Painter's tape will give you a chance to see the placement before finalizing the hardware, plus it won't damage the finish of your cabinetry. If you aren't placing them yourself, make sure to express to your installer exactly how you want your cabinet hardware installed. Write down clear instructions so that you will get the perfect design results.
