What's the Difference Between Single and Double Cylinder Deadbolts?
Single Cylinder Deadbolts
Single cylinder deadbolts are the most common type of deadbolt. Single cylinder deadbolts have a thumb turn on the inside to lock or unlock the door and a key hole on the outside. When locked, you have to have a key to enter from the outside but from the inside all you have to do is retract the bolt by turning the thumbturn to unlock. Single cylinder deadbolts are suggested for most applications
Double Cylinder Deadbolts
Double cylinder deadbolts have a key hole on both sides of the door and require a key to lock or unlock the door. Double cylinder deadbolts are sometimes used on glass doors but not main exit door. Because you have to have a key to unlock the door, they are not ideal in emergency situations. If there were a fire in your home or some other kind of emergency, you would not want to have to locate a key before being able to exit - for this reason we do not recommend using a double cylinder deadbolt on a primary exit door.
